The pros and cons of long pastoral tenure have been debated for years.  Two articles have been published in Chron.com, however, which give a strong basis for encouraging employees to continue with a company long term.  “Positive Effects of Tenure” and Why are Long-Term Employees Important,” come to the conclusion that a company derives greater benefits when their employees make a long-term commitment.

As is often the case, there are many corollaries in the church as well.  Church growth expert and Charles Arn, the President of “American Society of Church Growth,” spoke of a study that found a startling relationship between the length of time pastors had been in their churches and the growth or decline of those churches.  He concluded that long-term pastorates do not guarantee that a church will grow. But short-term pastorates essentially guarantee that a church will not grow.”
