Me, Lord? Me, Lord!

Most of us would have to admit that at some point in our lives we have looked at a task to be performed with a feeling of inadequacy. If asked to do the job our response probably was, “You’d better get someone that is more capable. I don’t think I would be able to do well if I took on the assignment.”

Why do we think others are better suited to do a task? Why do we look at ourselves and wag our heads in dismay? Why do we look in the mirror and see things that no one else ever notices?

One out of every five people are now over 65. Every year, around nine million older persons are added to the world’s population. The United Nations (1998) reports that by 2050, the figure of elderly population would reach to 2 billion. If we assume that these people have plans to have a long vacation for the rest of their lives then the God’s kingdom is in trouble. If 20% of all potential workers back away from Christian service the mission God has given to the church will never be accomplished.

This lesson will consider a news item describing a Ukrainian grandmother who was not willing to sit aside and watch her country be invaded by the Russian forces. She enlisted in the army and trained to be a soldier alongside young men forty years younger. Then we will look at what the Bible says through example and precept regarding serving in the kingdom of God. We will try to answer the question, “Should Christians ever expect to ‘retire’ from Christian service?”

Lesson Objective:  By the end of the lesson the students should see the importance of older Christian’s continued involvement in Christian service.
