Tragedy struck as firemen fought a fierce blaze near the small town of Yarnell, about 80 miles northwest of Phoenix. In the worst firefighting tragedy in eighty years, nineteen of the twenty elite wildland firefighters from the Prescott-based Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew lost their lives. Authorities explain that a highly volatile mix of erratic winds gusting to gale-force intensity, low humidity, a sweltering heat wave, and thick, drought-parched brush were all factors in the mix that produced the tragedy. They leave behind families and friends to mourn their passing.
Most people will face some traumatic event in their lives. Many will be devastated. How they deal with their circumstances may affect relationships, plans for the future, or even their health. How does a Christian respond to tragedy? How can a Christian help others who are going through these times of trouble? These and many other questions will be considered as the news item regarding the 19 firefighters, who gave their lives fighting the recent Arizona wildland fire, is discussed.
