Tragedy struck as firemen fought a fierce blaze near the small town of Yarnell, about 80 miles northwest of Phoenix.  In the worst firefighting tragedy in eighty years, nineteen of the twenty elite wildland firefighters from the Prescott-based Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew lost their lives.  Authorities explain that a highly volatile mix of erratic winds gusting to gale-force intensity, low humidity, a sweltering heat wave, and thick, drought-parched brush were all factors in the mix that produced the tragedy.  They leave behind families and friends to mourn their passing.
